My name is Mia Damiani and I am excited for the privilege to serve as your Principal at Sequoia Pathfinder Academy at Eastmark!
My career in education began 16 years ago as a 3rd and 4th grade teacher in Tempe, AZ. After spending 7 years in the classroom, I became a Structured English Immersion Coach. Eventually, I went on to Grand Canyon University in 2013 as a faculty member in the College of Education. I joined Edkey, Inc. in 2017, where I served as the Assistant Principal at Pathfinder Academy in Mesa.
I was raised in the east valley and attended Arizona State University, where I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Multilingual/Multicultural Education in 2002 and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration in 2007.
When I am not at school, I am a mom to four pretty cool kids! My older kids (Diego, 23 and Jade, 21) are recent college graduates and enjoy working within the field of education also! My younger daughters (Bella, 13 and Gia, 10) enjoy competitive volleyball and helping me in the kitchen. In my “free time”, I love to grill on my patio, spend time with my family, and travel as much as possible.
I am so thankful to have such an incredible opportunity to be a part of this innovative, dedicated and caring community. I look forward to continuing to build relationships with our current families and get to know our new families as well.
If you are new to the Eastmark area or to SPAE, please feel free to stop by and say hi anytime!
My name is Erin McDonald and I have been a part of the Sequoia Pathfinder Academy at Eastmark community since it opened seven years ago. I pursued my life-long love of science while attending Arizona State University where I studied anthropology and geology. I have enjoyed using my background while helping young learners pursue their own scientific and self-discoveries. I have taught preschool for 2 years and this will be my 12th year as a kindergarten teacher. I am very excited to be at a school that embraces a project approach to learning. Be prepared for your child to take charge of their own growth as they learn reading, writing and math skills through exploring topics that interest them!
My name is Sofia Murphy and this is my second year at SPAE. I will be teaching the Spanish component of our dual language program for kindergarten. I am originally from Colombia and have lived in several cities in the United States with my husband for over seven years. We moved to Arizona in 2019 and are happy to call Eastmark home. I have a Masters degree in Early Childhood Education from ASU and I have been teaching young children during the last five years. Seeing them achieve milestones brings joy to my life. I have had a great interest in languages and bilingualism since I was a little girl. When I am not teaching, I enjoy going on walks and hikes with my husband, trying new restaurants, exploring photography, reading books, and adding new music to my collection.
Hello Everybody! My name is Melissa Sandberg, and I am thrilled to begin another year as a first grade teacher at Sequoia Pathfinder Academy at Eastmark. I have lived in Arizona since 2008, and I feel so fortunate to call the “Valley of the Sun” my home! I am originally from Highland Park, Illinois (near Chicago) and though I loved growing up there, I definitely do not miss the cold weather and snowstorms! I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2001 with a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and received my Master’s degree in Education (Reading) from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2006. I was a public school teacher in Chicago and Wisconsin for several years, and I also taught Kindergarten for three years at a school in East Mesa. I have been married to my wonderful husband Jon since March 2013, and our son Jack will be in first grade at SPAE this year! Spending time with my family is my absolute favorite thing to do, but I also enjoy reading, watching movies, and traveling. Working with children has always been a passion of mine, and I love seeing them grow and learn every day. I’m looking forward to another wonderful year at Sequoia Pathfinder Academy at Eastmark!
Hola a todos! My name is Elizabeth Madrigal and I am originally from Costa Rica. Our family moved to Arizona 13 years ago, due to my husband’s job. I have two wonderful sons; my oldest is almost 25 years old and he is a Chemical Engineer and my youngest is 18 and he is about to start his freshman year pursuing a career in Industrial Engineering at ASU. They are both fully bilingual (hint hint) and I am incredibly proud of them.
I have a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources and used to work in that field back in Costa Rica. Previously, I had the opportunity to teach English in a preschool setting and I absolutely loved it! I love working with kids because they are like little sponges waiting to absorb everything you send their way, especially when it comes to learning a new language. I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in Elementary Education. I consider myself a highly active person; I love to exercise, travel and try different types of food. I also enjoy going to the movies and reading. My favorite thing in the entire world is spending time with my family.
This is my second year teaching the dual language first grade class at SPAE. I am extremely excited to teach your precious children. I look forward to working with each of you in making this a remarkably successful year.
Hi, I’m Angela Sermeño and I am thrilled to be a member of SPAE staff! Originally from Texas, my family moved to Arizona to gain opportunity and adventure. I joined the Edkey Charter School Organization in 2009 and have teaching experience in kindergarten, first and second. In addition to teaching second grade, I coach and facilitate SPAE’s VEX IQ Robotics Club, a REC (Robotics Education and Competition) program.
I received my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Arizona State University East. In addition, I earned a Master’s degree in Teaching and Learning from Argosy University, Phoenix College of Education.
Eddie and I have been together since high school; we have two energetic, aging dogs that we rescued. Personally, I enjoy training, gardening, traveling, hiking, making natural remedies, and spending quality time with family and friends.
I see each day as an opportunity to learn something new! I hope to empower students and instill the motivation for lifelong learning. As a teacher, I truly believe that every child will be known and will strive to offer positive school experiences so that children continue to have an innate desire to learn and the power to grow. In my classroom, I create a stimulating environment that helps to enable students to reach their fullest potential. I am looking forward to another amazing year at Sequoia Pathfinder Academy at Eastmark!

I aspire to constantly be improving my craft as a teacher in order to cultivate an environment that fosters a love for learning. “If you ever start to feel comfortable, it’s a sign that you’ve stopped growing.”-Hope and Wade King-The Wild Card.

As part of this process, they will have the opportunity to hone their skills at coding, game design, web design, and research in the process of solving problems and building projects.
The 2020-21 school year presents a couple of interesting changes for me. For the first time, I will be teaching math and science just to 5th grade. A very warm hello! My name is Danielle Gauani, and this is my fifth year teaching art at Sequoia Pathfinder Academy at Eastmark. Originally from the Netherlands and New York, I made my way to beautiful Arizona to attend Northern Arizona University. My husband and I have three children together.
I have had a lifelong love, devotion, and respect for the Visual & Literary Arts. While volunteering extensively in my children’s preschools and elementary schools, it became clear to me, that my greatest passion is to introduce students to Art from around the world… and to invite them to journey deeper into their own imagination. Inspiring each child to see that, in fact…. they are the Masterpiece!

Hi, my name is Julie McEachran and I am thrilled to be able to start another year at SPAE! I am SPAE’s Special Education teacher. I graduated from Brigham Young University-Idaho with a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education K-12. Over the years of my education, I have been able to work with so many different students with varying disabilities and abilities. I have enjoyed working with each of these children and helping them grow in their learning. I did my student teaching at Poston Jr. High, where I was in a self-contained classroom working with students with Autism and Other Health Impairment. I loved my time there working with those students and seeing their growth together. I am so excited to be able to work with the SPAE students again, and help them get closer to reaching their goals. I have a passion for these students and I truly believe that they are capable of so many great things with the help and support provided. Their potentials are great, and I love seeing them gain those skills.
I grew up in Ontario, Canada and lived there my whole life until I went to school in Idaho. After Idaho, I moved to Arizona where I have been and enjoyed. Being one of the older cousins in my family, I have had so many younger children to spend time with and watch grow. I did a lot of babysitting growing up. I also got to help a lot when my nephew and two nieces were born, which I think helped drive my passion for working with children. In my spare time, I enjoy going out in nature, being active, playing with my dog, hanging out with family, playing games, working on art projects/crafts, or relaxing with a show. I also love to travel when I can, whether it’s somewhere close or somewhere far in the world. I also love trying and experiencing new things!
